Keeping the eyes healthy is the goal of the doctors at Dr C Optometry. Proper nutrition is essential in obtaining this goal. Eating a healthy well balanced diet is the most important part. Supplements may be recommended if they are needed. Always check with your doctor before you add any supplements.

Is there something that can help my dry eyes?
Yes there are supplements that can help. For people who have dry eyes, Omega 3 may be beneficial. Omega 3’s act to reduce inflammation in many tissues in the body including the lacrimal gland that produces part of our tears. The best source of Omega 3 is cold water fish such as salmon, tuna and sardines and also found in flaxseed. It is important to know that “fish oil” supplements have both anti-inflammatory Omega 3 and pro-inflammatory Omega 6. Not all Omega 3’s are absorbed by the body equally. Please discuss it with one of our doctors.

Can macular degeneration be prevented?
Very important studies were conducted by the National Institute of Health (N.I.H.) that studied the effects of supplements and their effects on macular degeneration. It concluded that high levels of antioxidants significantly decreased the risk of macular degeneration. Beta-carotine, lutein and zeaxanthin belong to the antioxidant family of organic pigments called carotenoids. Lutein and zeaxanthin because of the yellow color of their pigment appear to give extra protection from the effects of the high energy blue light. The addition of extra zinc may be beneficial for some and harmful for others based on their genetic makeup. A cheek swab can be done to test for its benefit. Be sure to discuss with your optometrist what is best for you.
